More about the exhibition from the author Eva Mili:
Inspiration:
In the spring of 2019, I went to a class at the "Lithuanian International Ballet Academy". I was looking for beautiful angles and interesting plots for a new cycle of paintings. In the class, I was impressed by the precise ballet movements and the whole atmosphere there. Here, in addition to ballet, there was also a lot of childish playfulness. The dancers were carelessly preparing for the lesson, telling about the day's adventures, cheerfully looking at each other, laughing a lot...
Process:
I worked on the cycle of paintings "Ballet Lesson" for four years. I painted with oil paints on canvas, one-layer painting (wet on wet) technique. With this technique, the main layer of the painting must be completed before the first applied paint has begun to dry. The low ambient temperature helps to keep the paint dry longer, so I painted the largest paintings in winter, by an open window. I dress thickly so that I don't get cold, and I dive into creativity with pleasure. The limited time devoted to one painting forces you to work precisely, make as few mistakes as possible, and fully devote yourself to the work you have started. I want the paintings to be bright, transparent, and evoke positive emotions. Therefore, I do not use pure black when painting, I choose a palette of lighter tones and brighter colors. I boldly apply thick, rough, impressionistic strokes that eventually magically transform into living people.
